Dry Eye Symptoms

What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a condition that causes the eyes to feel dry, gritty or irritated. It can happen when the eyes don’t have enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly.

The symptoms of dry eye can be mild in some people and severe in others. There is no single cause, but rather a combination of factors that can lead to the condition. These factors include genetics, aging, ocular surface disease, systemic diseases such as diabetes, and environmental conditions such as air pollution or wind.

Dry Eye Symptoms Include

 -Eye irritation or pain.

– A feeling that there is something in your eye.

– Blurred vision.

– Dryness or soreness around your eyes, nose, and mouth.

– Itchy eyes or eyelids.

– A burning sensation in your eyes, like you have a foreign object in them.

– A lack of tears when you cry or while washing your face.

How is Dry Eye Diagnosed

Dry eye is often diagnosed by an eye care professional through a comprehensive exam that includes testing tear production and quality as well as looking at the eyelids and surrounding structures.

The most common treatment for dry eye is artificial tears or ointments applied to the eyes several times per day. Other treatments may include warm compresses or special lubricating contact lenses. You must see an ophthalmologist to be properly diagnosed. There are numerous different types of treatments that are specific to different dry eye issues.
